The Kowloon Walled City was once thought of as the most crowded place on earth. It was demolished in 1994.
This interactive installation is a representation of the way the Kowloon Walled City exists today. Though it no longer exists physically, it's description and legend still grabs people's attention, and inspires creative works from movies such as batman and bladerunner to stories and paintings.
In the installation, a virtual city is created from text descriptions of the original. Through facial recognition, it detects when viewers are looking. When this happens the virtual city tries to spread its own legend by pulling out and showing the text descriptions. Each time a person views the installation and learns about the city, the shape of the virtual city changes, reflecting the changing way we collectively imagine the city.
In 1994 the city was demolished, but it lives on in the work it has inspired.
